Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)

Pain Reprocessing Therapy is a psychological treatment designed to help individuals suffering from chronic pain and pain from injuries. Thanks to modern brain imaging techniques, we now know that chronic pain originates in different areas of the brain from structural pain. However both are often connected and structural pain can become chronic. Essentially, the brain misinterprets signals from the body and environment as threats, even in the absence of ongoing physical harm and new negative “pathways” are built.

The goal of PRT is to work with the brains ability to “rewire” itself to change what it is perceiving. We achieve reductions, and sometimes complete elimination of pain through different techniques, such as psychoeducation, mindfulness, exposure techniques, and somatic tracking.

Pain is rarely maintained alone and often is made worse by anxiety, trauma, and other mental health conditions. As such, PRT is often used in conjunction with other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. Cassandra Elliot is trained to offer PRT.
